Plantain
Plantago latifolium, Plantago major
Plantain was imported to North America with the earliest of European Settlers. Commercially grown for the psyllium husks aiding as a fiber bulking agent, this plant’s true power is in the medicinal properties of its leaves.
According to the Doctrine of Signatures this plant should be useful as a poltice for bruises, and broken fingers and toes, this discounts the usefulness as an expectorant. Breathing a steam made of the leaves eases chest and sinus congestion and is helpful for cases of deep chest congestion.
